For most of us here in the United States it’s hard to imagine what daily life is like south of the border. The last time political candidates were assassinated here was nearly fifty years ago during the turbulent 60's. We cannot imagine what it is like for mass graves to be found on a semi-regular basis, for loved ones to go missing without a trace and for the police to tell you that any one who has disappeared was probably just a druggie or a drug-mule anyway, so who cares?

What is going on astrologically for Mexico? 2010 was the tail end of the T-square between Saturn, Uranus and Pluto, and, in 2011 and beyond, it is the Uranus-Pluto square.

According to Nick Campion's The Book of World Horoscopes, Mexican astrologer's use an independence chart set for September 28, 1821at 6:00 pm. [4]

Mexico's radix chart has a T-square between the Sun (5 Libra), opposed by Pluto (28 Pisces) and squared by Uranus conjunct Neptune conjunct the MC (29 Sagittarius, 0 Capricorn, and 6 Capricorn, respectively). The alignment of Saturn, Uranus and Pluto in a T-square sits directly on Mexico's radix T-square, indicating a very difficult time period indeed — and the ongoing square between Uranus and Pluto shows no sign of giving any relief!

In mundane astrology, the Sun represents the ruler of a nation, national character and major events. When in Libra we can see Mexico's leaders as nice guys, always trying to make peace, but especially trying to avoid conflict. Pluto represents dictators, the underworld of organized crime, death, financial and political power. With Pluto in Pisces we can see the collective obsession (as a nation) to avoid the criminal element by diving into the spiritual waters of their own unique blend of Catholicism and indigenous beliefs. We also see that religion (Pisces), i.e. the Catholic Church, is also the power (Pluto) there.

Neptune rules drugs, ineffectiveness, covert actions, fraud and scandal. In Capricorn, drugs become big business. Uranus represents revolutions, and progressive to radical movements. In Sagittarius, Uranus represents the high idealism of revolution, but also the lack of long term planning that plagues a country without sound infrastructure or social services.

With Neptune and Uranus conjunct the MC (the government), there appears the marked tendency for Mexico's government to be stricken with inefficacy and sudden swings in policy. Uranus is the ruler of Mexico's 11th house, which represents the legislature. Having the planet that rules the legislature (Uranus) conjunct Neptune, the legislature faces the same conundrum as the leader: lost in the Neptunian fog of idealism and failing to use resources or being able to rule effectively.

Mexico's Jupiter and Saturn are conjunct and nothing says big bureaucracy like that! Trined by the Neptune and Uranus conjunction there is probably a whole lot of talk of things changing, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. The Neptune and Uranus conjunction of their revolution must have led to more than a few people wondering after it was all said and done, what really changed? This conjunction causes whatever progressive ideas and policies which could have helped the poor and needy to evaporate in the heat of a siesta. Additionally, with a radix Jupiter and Saturn conjunction, the country is likely to have money problems, as the nature of Saturn is to put restrictions on money and growth, which is Jupiter.

(A similar version of this article first appeared on The Mountain Astrologer's blog in September of 2010. It has been updated.)

A third mayor in less than a month had been assassinated in Mexico as of September 2010 [1] when I first published this article for The Mountain Astrologer's blog . That act had come on the heals of a gubernatorial candidate also being assassinated in June of 2010 [2]. When I wrote that article (just over a year ago) these political killings were on top of the estimated 28,000 murders of civilians in the past 4 years due to the war on drugs [3] — about the same number as the population of the town I was living in. Now the estimated death toll of civilians is over 45,000 and a Mexican Human Rights attorney has asked the International Criminal Court to investigate the killings by the mob and the military [10]. The president of Mexico and other politicians were then seriously considering legalizing drugs because they believed that all anti-drug policies had failed. They were looking to the success of nations in Europe which have decriminalized drugs for their inspiration.

The 2010 transits bi-wheel shows the alignment of planets with Mexico's Sun. Having transiting Saturn conjunct it indicates an immense stress level for the president of Mexico with pressure from all sides (he was probably feeling he had no way out). On the positive side, he could have used transiting Saturn to find enough support for the presidency to implement new laws to tackle this horrific criminal war on the peoples of his nation.

Mexico's Sun was opposed by transiting Uranus and Jupiter which were conjunct Mexico's radix Pluto. The criminal gangs and mafia (Pluto) in Mexico had a huge (Jupiter) and unexpected (Uranus) killing spree (Pluto) of political candidates and office holders (Sun). The President didn't get a chance to implement any laws that were effective in curbing drug violence.

Mexico's radix Uranus and Neptune conjunction had been transited by Pluto in 2010 which is now poised to cross over Mexico's MC. Pluto has also been in square to Mexico's Sun (President). Again, Pluto, symbolizing the criminal underworld has started doing business in a radically new way; car bombs (Uranus) to keep their drug money coming (Neptune) and increasing their power with mass killings (Pluto). The criminal gangs (Pluto) have, for all intents and purposes, taken over the government (Sun), or at least rendered it ineffective against them.

All throughout 2011 there have been reports of drug-related killings, journalist assassinations, mass graves being found, and questionable firearms sales across the US border into Mexico [5,6,7,8]. Currently, Saturn is opposing Mexico's radix Jupiter, indicating a severe low point for that country financially. The country may also be seriously considering what decisions or events took place 14-15 years ago and how that has led Mexico down the path it is currently on. As a country, the people or the government may decide they do not like where they are headed and change directions — common at the Saturn opposition Saturn point. As Saturn makes its way towards Mexico's Moon (at 5 degrees Scorpio), I wonder if the people of that nation will not face a major tragedy or hardship, possibly financial (as often the case with Saturn). It could also indicate a major infrastructure problem.

When I originally posted this article I thought that there was more hope for an innovative solution with perhaps the current president and government doing something radical to destroy the criminal underworld with the energy of the then transiting Uranus conjunct radix Pluto. Decriminalization of drugs (at least marijuana), I thought, could have been one possible solution — apparently that is still on the table with transiting Pluto exactly on the Midheaven of Mexico. What might appear at first to be a complete destruction of the government (if they let that happen), could lead to the phoenix rising from the ashes. Mexico may have to make a break from what it has done traditionally over the years, perhaps even finally go against the advice of others, and do what they think is best for their people.

History can help tell them what direction to go in: Mexico abolished slavery in 1829 and the battle of the Alamo and the war for the State of Texas was fought because white settlers wanted to own slaves yet Mexico said no. Mexico also outlawed the sale of lead in paint in 1938, whereas the US did not ban it for 40 more years [9]. Outsiders should not dictate policy for Mexico, nor should criminals. Mexico needs to decide what is best for itself.

This article is just a brief peak at Mexico's radix chart, recent and current transits. Here in the United States, we have our own issues with the current transiting square of Uranus and Pluto: governmental bureaucracy, corruption, and high death rates due to violence and lack of social services. Let us pray that our brothers and sisters to the south (whose former land many of us now live on) can find a way through these trying times and make a country that is safe and prosperous for all. May we here in the US be able to do the same.
